How It’s Done
Watch our acupuncturist, Suzie, perform cupping on a patient from our old clinic out west, prior to our move to Cleveland.
What is it?
Cupping is very similar to a deep tissue massage - and is the original form of myofascial release - predating the modern forms by about 3,000- plus years (cupping therapy was mentioned in the Ebers Papyrus - one of the the oldest known medical texts, dating back to 1550 BC.) Today it’s widely used for the same reasons you might use a massage - to relax, ease tension and relieve pain.
What About those Marks?
Cupping can leave temporary marks on the skin that range in color from light pink or tan to dark purple. This is due to bringing blood to the surface - and yes, it is similar to a bruise. In Chinese medicine we believe the darker the mark the more stagnant the blood in the area is - and the more therapeutic the procedure. These marks last anywhere from 2 to 14 days and lighten in color as time goes on. The more often you receive cupping in the same area, the lighter the marks will be.
